Using Dictation Software to Write Articles

I’ve been using computers for many years. I can touch type at a reasonable speed, however the promise of dictating at a speed of over 100 words a minute if something that my typing could never keep up with.

I first tried dictation software around five years ago and although it was okay for some tasks the amount of mistakes that the software made meant that I spent almost as much time correcting as I would have done typing the article by hand. Every so often I come across the latest versions of dictation software and promise myself to give them a go. Then I usually forget all about it, however this time, when I saw the latest version of naturally speaking I read some reviews and then purchased the software.

I’m actually using the software right now to write this article. The software installed without any problems and within 30 minutes I’d run through the basic training. I have to say I’m very impressed with the accuracy, so far I’ve only had to correct one word in this article.

It’s too early to say whether this latest version of Naturally Speaking 10 will be able to replace a lot of my typing, however for writing articles for submission or content for my websites it looks like it will be very useful.

When reading reviews of the software one thing came up repeatedly, and that is having a good quality microphone or headset. I purchased the Sennheiser PC 131 as it got good reviews and seemed decent value at just under £40. I’m not sure whether I would have got such good results with my old headset which came free with the PC I bought around 10 years ago.

So what are my initial thoughts? I’m actually pretty impressed with both the speed and accuracy of the software. Using it pretty much out of the box it performs admirably and the more I use it the more accurate it promises to become. The next big test will be writing that contains more complex characters, and I’ll be sure to let you know how the software copes with that.

If you have been thinking of testing dictation software now might be a good time to give it a go.

An Upgrade In Voice Recognition Software

Many small to mid-size medical offices are already using dictation software for their dictation and transcription needs. Upgrading to the newest edition of software increases productivity and helps medical providers save more time. One of the most noticeable ways that voice recognition software saves time is by translating speech to text at a rate that is nearly three times faster than the average person can type. This rate of translation allows the busy health care provider to speak naturally, and not have to worry nearly as much about the programming keeping up with them.

Speed is not the only benefit to upgrading the dictation software used in the small to mid-size medical practice. Accuracy has been improved with upgraded voice recognition software. Dictation software that can handle the needs of the medical practice has to be specially designed. Medical terminology and the vocabularies needed for medical specialties and subspecialties are highly complex. Standard speech to text software is not sensitive enough to handle the scope of the vocabulary used in medical practices. Selecting medical dictation software and keeping that software upgraded, helps the busy medical practice streamline the process of medical record keeping.

Patient confidentiality is highly important, and medical clinics should take the utmost care in protecting patients. With threats like medical identity theft, providers cannot afford to be negligent when securing patient information. Thankfully, there is voice recognition software that it HIPAA compliant and helps health care professionals protect their patients. By keeping patient information secure, medical professionals are able to maintain patient trust and earn repeat business from their clients.

Spending time face to face with patients, answering questions and really getting to the bottom of individual health concerns is important. Yet, with all of the tasks that health care providers are required to oversee and take care of, it becomes increasingly difficult to give patients that time. Medical voice recognition software can help solve some of these problems. While dictation software can quickly take speech and translate it to text, comprehensive voice recognition software can do more. Medical voice recognition software can understand and execute voice commands, record information directly into Windows based electronic health records (EHR), and other Windows based programs. Plus, voice recognition software can allow the user to control their computer with voice commands. This allows for quick, easy navigation of the computer and reduces the time the medical provider must spend in front of the screen.
